W. Bill

The best stories - like the best outfits - start as a simple idea. It was William Bill’s idea to open a little shop. He set one up in Mold, North Wales, 175 years ago. He sold tweeds and woollen blankets to this bustling market town. By the time his son inherited the business, London had fallen in love with tweed. William Bill junior seized his chance, and headed off to London to make his fortune.

Thanks to his superior tweed and cashmere, William’s reputation grew. W Bill cloth has been adopted by influencers since the early 1900s. Picasso had a W Bill jacket. Sir Ernest Shackleton sported our pullovers on an expedition to the Antarctic. Sir Edmund Hilary wore W Bill for the first Everest expedition in 1953. Today we supply tweed to the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Peter Capaldi’s Dr Who and the cast of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby.

W Bill’s luxurious, soft tweed is woven in Scotland, Ireland and - true to its roots - North Wales. The cloth creates stunning sports jackets and weekend casual wear to help you stand out from the crowd. The wide variety of colours and patterns make striking lightweight suits, or jackets that work beautifully paired with chinos or jeans. There’s a huge range of stylish, vibrant colours to choose from. We recommend starting like William Bill would have done - with a simple idea. Pick a pattern and see where it takes you.
